Wedding at Xagħra Basilica

by Stefan Attard

Stained Glass Marrige SymbolsIn the afternoon, at 5pm, the church bells of the Basilica of Xagħra rang happily announcing the Nuptial Mass of Joline Refalo and Charles Xuereb. This young couple decided to utter their vows in front of the Minister of God. Floral arrangements decorated the altar and showed the festivity this sacrament brings around.

The bride was welcomed in church by Marouska Attard interpreting Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’. Then mass followed with the choir interpreting ‘Allelulia’, ‘Ave Verum’ (Mozart), ‘Sanctus’ (Oltrasi), ‘Il-Mulej qam mill-imwiet’ (Portelli), ‘Agnus Dei’ (Oltrasi), ‘Panis Angelicus’ (Franck), ‘Bless the Lord’, ‘Jubilate Deo’ (Portelli). Mass was officiated by Ref. Fr. Alex Refalo, uncle of the bride. The choir was accompanied by members of the Jubilate Ensemble: Francesco Ghirxi (organ), Charleen Caruana (violin) and Noemi Attard (flute).

Finally, as photos were being taken as memoire of the occasion, the organist interpreted Vidor’s ‘Toccata from Symphony No. 5’ and Mendelssohn ‘Wedding March’.
