The 12th edition of Carols by Candlelight

by Stefan Attard

As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, soon winter comes to mind. While seeking warmth inside our houses, the Christmas month approaches. All Christmas lovers start searching for gifts to buy or food to prepare, others buy decorations to add to their collections and others start asking about Christmas events.

Many have marked the event of ‘Carols by Candlelight’ in their Christmas schedule and as from months before start asking about the event. It was introduced by the Schola Cantorum Jubilate in 2003 that kept holding it annually. It is a major Christmas event which attracts many, even foreigners who plan their holidays according to this event.

The Gozitan choir, under the direction of Marouska Attard succeeded in creating an event which brings around the true spirit of Christmas. Such spirit, even with a spiritual touch, manages to bring many childhood memories and above all supports life. This year’s programme includes various traditional carols and other less popular pieces which when sung by the Christmas-passionate choristers transmit a sense of joy and peace. This year, attendees will listen to compositions by Prætorius, Adams, Davies, Gruber, Chilcott and by Sir David Willcocks, who passed away some months ago and whose name is synonymous with Christmas musical arrangements.

Another special setting is being prepared for this year’s edition of ‘Carols by Candlelight’ which once again will be held at St. Augustine’s Priory in Victoria. The cloister of the same priory, will later serve as a banquet hall where delicious Christmas plates will be served after being delicately prepared by the Ta’ Frenċ Restaurant Chefs. The foyer of the same complex will host an exhibition by young artist Manuel Farrugia. As in previous editions, all proceeds will go for Ġużeppa Debono Home of Għajnsielem which caters for pro-life activities among other educational services.

‘Carols by Candlelight’ will be held on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th December at 7.30pm at St. Augustine’s Priory in Victoria Gozo. Tickets are on sale from D’Amato Records Shop in Valletta and from Bargate Bookshop in Victoria. To keep updated like our Facebook Page
