A Concert at Għarb Basilica

le="text-align: justify;">In occasion of the instalment of the new Parish Priest at the Basilica of the Visitation in Għarb, Gozo, Schola Cantorum Jubilate was invited to perform a concert of Marian Music – ‘Magnificat'. The new Parish Priest, Mgr. Joseph Sultana is the choir's spiritual director so this concert was justly held by the Schola Cantorum Jubilate. The concert started at 7.30pm with the Basilica packed with inhabitants from Għarb, from other Gozitan villages and even some Maltese friends of the Schola Cantorum. The choral part included: ‘Alma Redemptoris Mater' (arr. Frisina), ‘Ave Maria' (de Victoria), ‘Magnificat' (Portelli), ‘Ave Maris Stella' (Perosi), ‘Totus Tuus' (Frisina) and Pachelbel's ‘Magnificat'.

le="text-align: justify;">During the last two pieces, the choir was accompanied by the Jubilate Chamber Ensemble. The concert included some instrumental interpretations: ‘Ave Maria' (Caccini) by the Jubilate Chamber Ensemble, ‘Ave Maria' (Gounod) by Fabian Cini and Philip Attard on the keyboard and saxophone alto respectively and ‘Romance' (Beethoven) by Colin Attard and Pierre Louis Attard on the keyboard and violin respectively. Organist Joseph Camilleri played an improvisation on the ‘Salve Regina' on the church organ. This has been out of use for a long time and it is in the process of restoration. The soirée included also some speeches for the occasion. Mgr. Arc. Dr. Joseph Sultana gave a welcome address, Mgr. Joseph Bezzina talked about ‘Il-kappillani tal-Għarb tul is-snin' and finally Mayor David Apap Agius gave his official welcome to the newly appointed archpriest. Two poems were read by Michael Bajada and the other one by Can. Julian Refalo Rapa. Vivianne Zammit compered the evening. At the end of the concert, Rev. Fr. Michael Galea presented a written oratorio to Mgr. Sultana. This was written by the beloved bishop Nicholas Cauchi who was from Għarb and passed away recently. Rev. Galea encouraged Mgr. Sultana to do all the necessary to have music written for this oratorio and to do his utmost to have it performed in honour of the late Bishop's.
