As the Christmas season approaches, many are beginning to wonder whether Carols by Candlelight will be held again this year. Organised by Schola Cantorum Jubilate, this much-loved event has become a popular fixture in Gozo's Christmas calendar.
The tradition of Carols by Candlelight originated in Australia in 1938. Norman Banks, a Melbourne radio broadcaster, was on his way home on Christmas Eve when he noticed an elderly woman listening to carols through her window. Inspired by this simple yet touching scene, he organised a large gathering in Melbourne where people could sing Christmas carols together in an atmosphere illuminated by candlelight. To this day, the tradition continues in Australia, where outdoor gatherings bring communities together through the singing of Christmas carols.
In 2003, Schola Cantorum Jubilate introduced the event to Gozo, giving it its own distinctive identity while retaining the spirit of innovation, creativity and togetherness. Since its inception, the event has grown in popularity, with many people making it an annual Christmas appointment. In 2010, The Guardian recognised this SCJ event among Europe's top ten Christmas events.
Over the years, the event has featured a concert of Christmas carols, presented in a creative and distinctive manner through special lighting effects and Christmas decorations, outstanding musical interpretations and a carefully selected repertoire of both traditional and contemporary compositions. The concert has also incorporated literature and drama, adding a magical dimension to the evening and bringing deeper meaning to the Christmas season.
The musical experience was always followed by a four-course dinner, carefully selected to complement the occasion. Fourteen of the previous editions have taken place at St Augustine's Friary in Victoria, Gozo. Both the church and its cloister provide a unique atmosphere, fostering a special sense of connection between the choristers and the audience.
This year's 17th edition promises to be another memorable occasion. The organisers are considering making this the final edition before embarking on new and more ambitious projects. Preparations are therefore underway with the same attention to detail and care that have characterised previous editions. Carols by Candlelight 2026 will be held on 4th and 5th December at St. Augustine’s Friary in Victoria, starting at 7.30pm.
The musical repertoire will feature a diverse selection of classical and contemporary works by composers including Adam, Howells, Willcocks, Taverner, Stopford, Archer and Forrest. The choir will perform under the direction of Marouska Attard.
The concert will once again be followed by a delicious four-course meal, entrusted to Ogygia Caterers by Vini e Capricci.
Tickets are available through ShowsHappening.com, and availability is limited. For further information, interested persons may visit the choir's website or contact the organisers by email at info@scjchoir.com or by telephone on +356 7945 0950.
