The parish church of the Assumption of Our Lady in Birkirkara, popularly known as the Old Church, will provide the setting for a Lenten concert by one of the Maltese Islands’ leading choirs, the Schola Cantorum Jubilate of Xagħra, which this year is celebrating its 15th anniversary.
An article about Schola Cantorum Jubilate published by the Committee of the Regions (EU) earlier in September was placed second in a classification of articles. This shows that though most of the time the European Union is associated with politics and international relations, readers are still interested in arts.
Schola Cantorum Jubilate today was featured on ‘Għawdex Illum’, the programme which showcases Gozo and the Gozitans. In fact, it was all about the choir’s recent tour in Venice and Padova. CVC Media managed to capture the highlights of the tour and through its programme, the choristers could relive those precious moments spent together while the audience could watch all that the choir went through.
Undoubtedly it is a keepsake for the choristers. Another cherished memory to store in the archive!
When it comes to choral music, few will question the fact that the northern European countries have a greater tradition of choral singing than the southern Mediterranean countries. People living in the Mediterranean spend most of their time participating in outdoor activities. In relation to the Maltese archipelago, another potential explanation for this is that there is no record at all of folk songs in our culture. Thus the Maltese attitude towards choral singing was somewhat lukewarm.
